Why Almost Everyone Will Mislead Or Lie To You

Your parents will mislead you because:

Your schoolteachers, professors, assistants, and support staff will mislead you because:

They are mandatory reporters, so even though they say nothing bad will happen if you tell them something, whatever consequences come out of their report (including taking you from your parents, good or bad) are going to happen
They believe you should talk about your problems, when the answer is either to fix your problems, or to GTFO so you don’t have to deal with it anymore
They are told exactly what they have to teach, particularly in certain areas like sex education, so anything that deviates from those instructions, you’re not going to hear

Your employer will mislead you because:

Your happiness is not their concern, except as it relates to profits
They too, have to be concerned with equal opportunity employment, harassment, and criminal activities, and they have to protect themselves
Their reputation and maybe profits would be harmed if anything that could lead to bad publicity came to light (including, but not limited to, failed projects, allegations of a stressful work environment, any disparagement of shortcomings of their products)
They could be outright cancelled/lose large amounts of sales, even for your outside-of-work activities
They’re about to lay you off, or make other personnel moves you don’t like
Because your co-workers are plotting against you, or scheming for their own gain
Because they fear you, or the consequences of reporting, to you as a supervisor, who has control over a big part of their lives

Businesses generally will mislead you because:

They are operating on thin margins, and hence if anything goes wrong, they can’t live up to their commitments
They think they can get one over on you
They think you don’t have enough alternatives, whether that means finding the right complaint line (Comcast) or time (buying cars), to research and discover their lies
They don’t know whatever quality failing has made its way through to the product
They don’t know how much a project is going to cost/their internal estimates are wrong

Your family and friends will lie to you because:

They don’t want to hurt your feelings
Because they’re going to do something shady, like cheating on you, sneaking out of the house to street race, or stealing candy out of the jar
They’re kids and lie for no reason at all, and don’t understand the vast majority of actions they can take have no real consequences
Because they’re concerned about what people think about them, and they rightfully fear the consequences of looking stupid, weak, or holding an unpopular opinion
They want to manipulate you to make themselves feel more powerful and secure

Scientists and scholars will mislead you because:

They really don’t know the answers to complex and unsettled questions, and they don’t know how truly uncertain the situation is
The world is incredibly complex, and human expertise consequently is narrow, limited, and fallible

Bureaucrats (in government, academia, etc.) will lie to you because:

They only are the servants of the politicians/leaders over them
They have their own internal agendas and reputation to preserve and enlarge, especially if they want promotions
They have their own power fantasies which they want to act out, even if the scale is absurd

Police, prosecutors, and judges will lie to you because:

They all get paid by “the system” and hence can’t go against it, or anyone that can fire them
They are encouraged to elicit confessions, and, in practice, there are no enforced rules about how they can do that
They don’t know the law either, because it’s way too complex
They’re trying to move up in the world, and the way they do that is to collect scalps

Politicians will lie to you because they feel like it. But I don’t need to explain that to you ^_^
