By type of contribution:
Piecework – paid for by the piece at a rate in accordance with its projected market value and sub-composition in final product
Final product – either the open-market consumer value, or the value contributed to another product, bounded above by that value delta vs. that delivered by alternative products
Labor/engineering services – paid for by the value of labor hours with that skillset/capability in the open market, bounded above by the projected value delivered by that contribution to the final product (or maintenance of existing product), plus any bidding premium associated with schedule requirements
Commodities – bounded above either by the spot rate (short-term purchases) or the long-term market anticipation of the cumulative spot rates
Real estate – commensurate either with its value as a product, or commensurate with the investment value (e.g. its effective interest rate and risk premium)
Ownership of businesses – commensurate with its investment value
Ownership of debt obligations and other financial instruments – commensurate with its investment value

Value delivered: An alternative means of incentivizing production where the payment is some fraction of the value contributed by the worker (e.g. savings, capital losses avoided). The opportunity either must be open-competition, relatively close to the worker/organization’s overall compensation (not estimated to be greater than 2-3x, otherwise you would hire more people), or the contribution must be urgent and unplanned (e.g. disaster recovery work).

By role (note: value delivered can apply to all of these):
Technical performer – piecework or labor/engineering services, depending on the type
Reporter – piecework, then labor hours
Adviser – piecework, then labor hours
Director – if number of decisions is frequent, piecework can be used; otherwise labor hours

Note that charity, political contributions, gifts, and bribes are detached from the above; hence those are not functionally distinguishable when the compensation could be used to provide any of those.
